Ashutosh Gowariker is the director of the 2004 Indian film Swades.  The movie tells the story of Mohan Bhargava (played by Shah Rukh Khan), an NRI working as a successful scientist at NASA in the United States. He decides to return to his homeland, India, to search for his childhood nanny, Kaveri Amma (played by Kishori Ballal), whom he considers his only family.

Mohan arrives in a small village called Charanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he encounters a stark contrast between the advancements he witnessed in the U.S. and the rural backwardness of his homeland. The villagers lack access to basic amenities such as electricity and clean water.

While initially, Mohan intends to find Kaveri Amma and quickly return to the U.S., he gradually becomes more involved in the lives of the villagers. He meets Gita (played by Gayatri Joshi), a young school teacher, who is determined to bring about positive change in the village. Inspired by her dedication and the problems faced by the villagers, Mohan decides to stay and contribute to their development.

Mohan takes on several initiatives to improve the living conditions in the village. He starts by introducing electricity through a hydroelectric project, which he helps the villagers build using their own resources. Mohan also initiates a program to educate children in the village, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and self-sufficiency.

Throughout his journey, Mohan faces resistance from some villagers who are skeptical about change and unwilling to let go of their traditional ways. However, with time, Mohan's efforts begin to bear fruit as the village gradually transforms.

In the process, Mohan discovers the true meaning of love, belonging, and the importance of giving back to society. He forms deep bonds with the villagers, and they, in turn, accept him as one of their own. The film beautifully captures the essence of rural India, highlighting the need for progress and the power of unity.

"Swades" is not just a story of one man's journey, but also a reflection on the larger issues of brain drain, rural development, and the responsibility we have towards our nation. It portrays the idea that change begins with individuals and their determination to make a difference.

The movie ends with Mohan making a difficult choice between returning to the comforts of the U.S. or staying in India to continue his work. His decision reflects his newfound love for his homeland and his commitment to the people of the village who have become his family.
